During the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, 81 countries, along with global financial institutions and NGOs, announced the creation of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. This ambitious initiative seeks to eradicate hunger and poverty worldwide by 2030.
A Global Commitment to Ending Hunger
The alliance includes nations from all continents, major financial institutions, and 31 NGOs, with support from international entities like the European Union and the African Union. Key members include the United States, Germany, United Kingdom, France, South Africa, and United Arab Emirates.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva emphasized the importance of targeted public policies, citing examples like Brazil’s Bolsa Família and school meal programs as proven methods to combat hunger and restore dignity to vulnerable populations.
Brazil’s Leadership Role
Brazil and Bangladesh were the first countries to join the alliance. Brazil played a central role in structuring the alliance, leveraging efforts from multiple ministries and the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA).
The Brazilian government will provide initial support, including coordination and membership processes, with the alliance set to begin operations in 2025.
