Dana White Discusses the Potential Jon Jones vs. Alex Poatan Superfight

UFC President Dana White is feeling the pressure from the greatest fighter in the history of the Ultimate Fighting Championship: Jon Jones. The reigning heavyweight champion, ‘Bones’, has stated that he would only return to the octagon for a super fight with Alex Poatan.

Despite the pressure from Jones, White is uncertain whether this matchup would be a good one—especially for the Brazilian. Although White remains against the fight for now, he admitted that if both fighters push him hard enough, he could reconsider and make the fight happen.

“Do you know what I told them tonight? There’s no way I’m making this fight. Jon is just too big. He’s a fantastic wrestler. Did you see how he took Stipe down in the first round? I like Alex Pereira. But it doesn’t make sense to book this fight,” White explained.

“If both of them really want this and keep pressuring me, maybe I’ll do it. But Alex Pereira is doing so well in his division. Look at his age and what he’s accomplishing right now—why move up and fight someone much bigger who is an excellent wrestler? I want Pereira to stay where he is and keep doing what he’s doing, dominating the middleweight division,” Dana added.

“But again, if they both go crazy and keep pushing me, what am I going to do? They’re grown men, and I’m sure the fans want to see it too. I’m sure you want to see it, so we’ll talk about it,” White concluded.

BMF Title: The Attraction of the Ultimate Superfight

The idea for a fight between Jon Jones and Alex Poatan is centered around the coveted BMF (Baddest Mother F*cker) title. The BMF title was created in 2019 following a fight between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz, with Masvidal emerging victorious. The concept for the title came from Nate Diaz himself as part of the promotional buildup for the fight. Dana White, intrigued by the idea, introduced the title, and it has been contested in the UFC a few times since.

Jones and Poatan’s Future in the UFC

Jon Jones, who recently defeated Stipe Miocic, plans to vacate the heavyweight title. He has shown little interest in a unification fight against Tom Aspinall, dismissing it unless the payout is substantial. Jones has expressed that he would rather take on Poatan in a more marketable super fight, such as for the BMF belt.

On the other hand, Poatan is the reigning UFC middleweight champion, having successfully defended his title three times. With his impressive run, Poatan continues to dominate the division, but stepping up to fight Jones would be a significant challenge.

The Potential Clash of Titans

The possibility of a super fight between Jon Jones and Alex Poatan remains in the air, with Dana White indicating that while he’s hesitant, he may not be able to resist the pressure from both fighters and the fans. A clash for the BMF title would surely be a spectacle, but whether it will happen is still uncertain.
